Brief chose a medium which can be used to encourage female musicians to take their rock music seriously. This medium should also provide opportunities to showcase their vast talent to the rock industry. But also prove to the readers that female rock bands are not a separate genre or a trend. Background If I asked you to name or describe a rock musician, the most likely answer would be a male guitarist with long hair, names such as Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Eric Clapton, Zakk Wylde and Jimmy Page would all be expected and respectable answers. The reason behind this is most likely that that male musicians have been more revolutionary and groundbreaking within the rock industry. This does not say that females are not as musically talented but because they "didn't do it first", they will not get as much credit for the talent. So the talent and potential is out there it just needs to be tapped and highlighted.

Solution My solution to this brief is a magazine called "eclectrik rock". This magazine's main purpose is to provide inspiration for new musicians and create awareness of the female rock bands already out there. It does not contain any feminist articles as it is not a political magazine. But a mag that provides female bands with the same interest and attention as the male bands and conduct interviews based on questions concerning music rather than their love and social lives. It is similar in the layout design to that of "kerrang" and "NME" and contains gig reviews and articles concerning new bands as well as providing tabs and how to further your music career as an artist or through other possibilities within the rock industry. "Eclectrik Rock" does not only encourage you to read about the music but also to play it, using the "Eclectrik Rock" Merchandise. It would be possible to buy the strings, plectrums and guitar straps or the knickers and t-shirt, so "eclectrik rock" would contribute to your music passion and your 'eclectrik' lifestyle. |
