The Brief

Chose a Shakespeare sonnet and represent it typographically in a new environment. Make sure the subject of the sonnet is considered and reflected in your choice of environment.

The Solution

This project is based on Shakespeare's sonnet number 65. I have typographically represented this sonnet in various natural environments using the medium of footprints. By placing it on the sole of a welly boot, the structure of the typography is still constricted but the location and environment of the type is ever changing depending on the person wearing the welly. This in turn makes the wearer of the boot partly typographer, designer and poet.

This print is also determined by various factors such as the weather, the surface and seasons, making each print an individual piece of art and typography. Time is also a main factor that influences the print. The welly print might last for over twenty years if pressed in to setting concrete or last only five minutes if stepped out of a puddle and on to dry pavement. This idea of time and circumstance is suggested in the nature of the chosen sonnet. In the sonnet Shakespeare reflects on how time has the power to influence art and beauty within the natural world as well as his poetry.
